One of our favorite aspects of Colorado interior design is having the opportunity to create and live in spaces with a deep connection to nature. Whether we’re showcasing stunning mountain views or sourcing cozy furniture for a home nestled among the trees, it’s impossible to be an interior designer here and ignore the beautiful setting beyond our clients’ windows. With that being said, though, there are many different ways to achieve a connection to nature through indoor-outdoor living. We have shared some of our recent projects below. Perhaps they will inspire you to welcome nature into your home for a private and peaceful retreat from the rest of the world.
In this North Denver estate, we knew we had to take advantage of the sweeping mountain views to the west, as well as the expansive outdoor spaces. We chose to utilize a bi-folding door in the dining room to draw attention to the picturesque scenery. The doors will lead to a patio in the future. In the kitchen, we also added a bi-folding window that will eventually open up to an exterior bar area.
This dining room might look very different from our Denver estate project, but it just goes to show that most design styles can be adapted for indoor-outdoor living. Tall French doors, flanked by full-length windows, lead from the kitchen and dining room of this modern farmhouse to an outdoor kitchen area. There is plenty of natural light spilling into the space and inviting a little piece of the outdoors inside.
The great room of this home also features a bi-folding door, which opens onto a large covered outdoor sitting area. When the glass door is completely folded back, the boundary between interior and exterior fades away. The great room still provides shelter, but it is exposed to the elements of nature, allowing for a thoughtfully blended indoor-outdoor experience.
Perhaps our best example of indoor-outdoor living is the modern mountain home project that we completed in Evergreen, Colorado. This property sits on a hill among the treetops, so we really wanted to maximize the view and offer an effortless connection to the outdoors.
With a four-panel sliding door in the dining room, we were able to create a seamless transition between the interior and private deck. The awning window in the kitchen does not have vertical dividers, so it provides uninterrupted views outside, whether it is open or closed.
Even the immediate views outside do not disappoint. The bar top seating outside the window is a great place to host guests for happy hour, morning coffee, or dinner, while taking in the scenery. Since it is surrounded by trees, there is a true sense of privacy on the deck, making it the perfect spot to relax, unwind, and immerse oneself in nature.
